Principal component analysis for the assessment of metabolic syndrome features following gestational diabetes among women of three ethnic groups

Kousta E , Godsland IF , Jeffs JAR , Efstathiadou Z , Barrett SC , Doré CJ , McCarthy MI , Johnston DG

To explore the correlation structure of individual components of the Metabolic Syndrome and identify combinations of correlated variables we used principal component analysis (PCA) in a multiethnic group of women with a history of GDM (pGDM) (185 European, 103 South Asian, 80 African–Caribbean), recruited at 20.0 (18.2–22.1) months (geometric mean (95% CI)) after pregnancy and 482 control women of similar ethnicities. BMI, W:H ratio, systolic and diastolic BP, f. glu...

Association between polymorphisms within the SUR1/Kir6.2 gene region and polycystic ovary syndrome: a case-control study

Barber TM , Zeggini E , Goh MJ , Webber L , Wass JAH , Franks S , McCarthy MI

Hyperinsulinaemia has an important role in the aetiology of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Logical candidate genes for the development of PCOS therefore include those genes that influence β-cell insulin secretion such as ABCC8 and KCNJ11 on human chromosome 11. These two genes encode the SUR1 and kir6.2 components of the β-cell kATP channel respectively. To our knowledge, these genes have not been studied in women with PCOS previously.<p class="a...

FAILURE OF SUPPRESSION OF ENDOGENOUS GLUCOSE PRODUCTION (EGP) DIMINISHED LIPOLYSIS AND FREE FATTY ACID (FFA) OXIDATION IN A POPULATION AT HIGH RISK OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF TYPE 2 DIABETES

Forbes S , Robinson S , McCarthy MI , MacDonald IA , Bannister P , Venketesan S , Johnston DG

Type 2 diabetes is associated with insulin resistance, failure to suppress lipolysis and EGP and impaired FFA oxidation. It is not known which defect develops first.Eleven European women with previous gestational diabetes (PGDM) and normal glucose tolerance post-partum, as a high risk group for the development of Type 2 diabetes, and 11 matched controls (BMI 23.8±4.5 kg m-2 versus 24.6±4.9 kg m-2 respectively) were stu...
